Should be B, we need to show contrast here and B does it good

B, D and E are incorrect here.

Stuck with A and C. But will go with A.

I agree that it is b/w A and C

I will go with C, because "like" is used here to show similarity...

B is awkward because of "while"... meaning "during... blah, Syrians never blah", however "have been" indicates that it is still the case today, so can't be "while" whatever happened in the past

C.

Don't think 'Even as...' is used in comparisons...

my vote for C too as "like" shows similarity here which is not clear in A with the use of even

C should be it.
We need 'like' to show the similarity.

The only fight is between A and C.

"like" is never used to compare clauses. The best option would be "Just as" but its not there in choices. Others are worst.

So it must be A.

I would pick A too, although I don't like the "Even as".. "Just as" would have been better.

"Like" is incorrect as explained by ps_dahiya. The actions - forgiving X vs absolving Y - are being compared in the original sentence. Hence we need "as"

(A) is the lesser of the five evils. Still reads like :puke though.
