Even if of Even though [#permalink] New post 20 Nov 2008, 14:23
Distinguished architecture requires the expenditure of large sums of money, even if it is by no means certain that the expenditure of large sums of money produce distinguished architecture.
(A) even if it is by no means certain that the expenditure of large sums of money produce
(B) even if it is by no means certain that the expenditure of large sums of money will produce
(C) even though there is no certainty that the expenditure of money in large sums produces
(D) even though it is by no means certain that the expenditure of large sums of money produces
(E) though there is no certainty as to the expenditure of money in large sums producing

--- I was wondering what it's the difference between even though and even if????? and what could be the right answer

Hi guys,

this is a tough one!

IMO C

I've discarded A, B and B because of "by no means", it sounds wordy to me. Between C and E, well, I think the sentence needs an even at the beginning

OA and source?

Thanks

Another D.
A/B - verbs problem.
C - there is? where? nooo.
D - expenditure - produces .............correct.
E - there is? where?

subject-verb agreement...expenditure needs "produces"..so A,B,E are out.
among C and D, C distorts meaning slightly. C seems to state definitively that there is no certainty...

money is large sums is wordy .... large sums of money is right one .... C & E out

IMO D.....

A, B and E are out because of missing subject vs verb form....between C and D...C misses the || ism "in large sums" instead of "of large sums"....therefore D

I had actually fallen for C, for exactly the same reasons as JohnLewis.

But I am really impressed with the reasoning of Ron Purewal from the link above.
So yes its D.

B does not have a tense issue as it uses will produce as needed in a conditional sentence. THe problem is if is not needed to start with.
