You shouldn't use between if more than two people or entities are involved and these entities are not treated as distinct entities/individuals. It is ok to say there was a three-way between me and Tom and Dan, but it would be incorrect to say "the three-way caused a rift between us." You need to use among when dealing with a collective noun like class/us, where the separate individuals are not treated distinctly.
