Even though the foreign exchange student was from a completely different culture, it was not long before she felt comfortable between us. A.between us B.between most of us C.around us D.among us E.in this culture where the rest of us are comfortable Doesn't 'Around us' sound better than 'Among us'?

The student after was comfortable among the other students (or at least in the classroom). Around is completely inappropriate See the use of around http://www.perfectyourenglish.com/usage/around.htm

Why is A incorrect? They could have a three-way and she is between the narrator and some other guy? D is incorrect because it changes the meaning of the sentence.

You shouldn't use between if more than two people or entities are involved and these entities are not treated as distinct entities/individuals. It is ok to say there was a three-way between me and Tom and Dan, but it would be incorrect to say "the three-way caused a rift between us." You need to use among when dealing with a collective noun like class/us, where the separate individuals are not treated distinctly. I think the new student is one of the students in that class or school. Thus Among is better than Around...
Correct me if i am wrong....
