Exam on 15th. What to do in last 5 days ??? very anxious .. [#permalink] New post 10 Sep 2009, 06:04
Hi All,

I have my exam on the 15th. I am very anxious.
my scores are as follows :

kaplan test 1 600
kaplan test 2 620
kaplan test 3 600
powerprep 1 750
powerprep 2 710
gmatprep 1 740

While I am consistently scoring 48-49 in math and I am sure about getting similar scores in actual exam also, I am getting 38-44 in verbal. I am yet to get consistency in verbal. And the bigger problem is I am unable to concentrate on my studies in last few days due to a lot of anxiety.
I have searched a lot of threads on the forum and not many tell about things to do in last few days.
Advice from experts needed.

This variability can really haunt you.

When my scores were inconsistent, I scored in the middle of my high and low score.

Later I consistently scored 680 on all practice tests.

It could also be nothing, simply nerves. Just remember to slow down when reading questions and don't let one question get you down. When your nerves get the best of you when studying, do something to unwind. Go for a walk, have a snack. Do something that's comforting. Don't do something that could stress you out.

You need to relax. You had enough practice and your practice scores look very good.

1) You need to avoid brain fatigue before the exam. Slowly try to relax and do non GMAT related activities.

2) Get plenty of sleep before the exam.

3) Also, trust your guts and don't question yourself during the exam. Many people fail to do this on the exam and end up with a score that doesn't quite reflect his or her true ability.

4) There are few sites that offer GMAT Studycards with tips and etc. Some of them have useful strategy as well. Go over them in the next 5 days.

5) Ending up with sub-700 GMAT score isn't the end of the world. If you don't score your target score now, you can always retake the exam. R1 deadline isn't the holy grail. There's R2. You have to accept this now before the exam. Otherwise, your anxiety isn't going to go away.

6) Don't take too much caffeine before the exam and take all the breaks that they give you.

I guess inconsistency is my forte ... my exam is on 16th sept and I took two more gmatpreps (reinstall) and here are all my scores :: (surprisingly I did not get any repeat in Quant...and very few repeats in verbal that too at the end of the section...)

gmatprep 1 740
powerprep 1 750
powerprep 2 710
gmatprep 2 760
gmatprep 3 720

I guess tomorrow I will give one more gmatprep and then the final exam on tuesday ..

I agree with the comment about taking a break and getting enough sleep. I haven't taken the GMAT yet but generally do very well on standardized tests. People ask me all the time what the secret is and I say that if you had the choice between cramming on the last day or getting more sleep, go with the sleep. The incremental advantage you have in not being tired far outweighs the advantage of cramming information that you only have a 50/50 shot of retaining anyways.

To the OP, curious to see how you did. I've been having a lot of variability in my test scores as well.
