Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan draw from their extensive experience and develop a great framework for execution.
Why do great plans often end up in the trash can? What do some strategies work great for some companies and dont work for others? The authors do a pretty good job with good examples. Larry quotes his own emails that he used to send to his employees. The authors emphasize the importance of having right people in the right positions in management.They talk about how some great people could not perform their tasks because they were not given the right kind of jobs.
The authors also talk about leaders having emotional fortitude. In short, good leaders put the right people in the right places and do not bring emotions into the picture when they have to fire someone. Larry further goes on to say that when letting someone go, its important to maintain that touch of sensitivity. The world is a small place and sooner or later, we would have to deal with our former employees working at other corporations.
The more experienced guys in middle managment might have different ideas of execution. But the message is clear -- Execution is the last mile. No matter how great an idea is, No matter how great the people are, an error in execution will not give desired results.
Reading this books was a good learning experience.
