Expalin plz - specially between C and E
24. A recent study has found that within the past few years, many doctors had elected early retirement rather than face the threats of lawsuits and the rising costs of malpractice insurance.
(A) had elected early retirement rather than face
(B) had elected early retirement instead of facing
(C) have elected retiring early instead of facing
(D) have elected to retire early rather than facing
(E) have elected to retire early rather than face
So between C and E...
C) have elected x instead of y. here x = retiring and y = facing....but i don' think the meaning holds...you don't 'elected facing'
E) have elected x rather than y. In this case it's not have elected to x rather than to y. It does not make sense...elected to retire versus 'elected to face'. You have 'have elected' (present perfect) and face (present)...so it's not perfect..but the meaning is not lost.
