Experience in just 1 company/familiar company/ am I too old? [#permalink] New post 03 Oct 2011, 00:05
Hi!!
Here my profile:

Birthday: 15/07/1981 (30 years old now)

Experience: 9 years as a Financial Director in my father's company (home textil import)

GPA: 3.0 (I worked and studied at the same time)

Studies: Degree in Business Administration (5 years). Two majors, in Accountancy and Audit and in Financing.

Achievements: (some of them)
- Computerize all the warehouse: We have 8.500 square meters with more than 2000 references of products. Before, just two guys knew where everything were, thus It was quite difficult to hire temporal workers. In addition, workers wasted a lot of time searching up and down the warehouse.
- Computerize fair orders. Before, we needed more than two weeks to type all the orders from the fair. Now, we record the orders with a pda and atumatically the orders are recorded in our system. Thanks to this, we can sen the orders more quickly and we can record more orders with less people.
- increase revenues of the company up to 14 million of Euros (in a market where the article are cheap) with 10 people (thanks to our innovations)

International experience: Some stays in USA and England to improve my english and in China (where we have a lot of suppliers) to know personally how they work.

TOEFL:
107
GMAT: +720 (expected)
Languages: English (high level), French (average level), Spanish (native)

Extracurricular activities and hobbies: Basketball highschool team, collaborating with some ONG (two locals and one international), Sports (triathlon, basketball, soccer, bodybuilding, martial arts, paddel...), photography, music (piano)....

Areas of interest: Management and Enterprenuer.

Goals short term: Work in a High Tech company such as Google, Apple, Amazon...or in an interesting High Tech startup
long term: My own start up (I do not discard to continue work in one of the big ones if I think it is enough motivating).

Universities I am interested: Stanford, Chicago Booth, Wharton, Columbia (all of them just for brand name).

Do you think I have chances to be admitted in a top ten MBA Program? I'm worried about my age and my experience (a lot of years but just in one company and worst in a familiar company)

P.D: Sorry for my english.

Hey there!
Don't worry about your English, it's great man!

You may have to get a better TOEFL for some of those Top 10 schools though,
:)

To get down to business, you have a good profile, and if you can hit that GMAT goal, you should have competitive chances even at Top 10 schools.

Actually, with your family business, it seems like you may have a good thing there. Very often schools REALLY like family business people. Why? Cause you already have a job and a company! :) all you have to do now is help it succeed. That's why my first piece of advice to you would be: When you apply, consider going with family business goals, like "I want to become CEO of the family textile business, and grow it to one of the top five in China" (Sounds impressive, right? :) )

It seems right up your alley, and good for your chances.

Hi Toni81,

You shouldn't be worried about your age or an imaginary cut-off line. Focus on showing progression in your career and do not be concerned.

Regarding your work experience, I recommend you read this case study of a family business candidate who was accepted into Harvard Business School:

Hope this was of help.

Cheers,

Conrad and the Stacy Blackman Team
