This is a typical experimental question which doesn't affect the GMAT Quantitative score?

Is this easy?

A. 20
B. 24
C. 40

E. 96

= 2 + 6 + 12 = 20.

* takes precedence over +

It is 20 and is evaluated as 2 + 6 + 12 = 20
* takes preference over +.

BTW, how do we know if a question is experimental or not?. Can we figure them out?

You will never know. They are usually everywhere. There is a possibility that a very easy one or a very tough one is an experimental question. I heard that some experimental questions are at the end of the exam, some in the middle and fewer in the beginning....

Ans: 20. I can't quite believe this is considered very hard. Basic rules of arithmetic.

It is evident. It is an extremely very easy question.

Let me give you another experimental question:

1/7 / 7/4 =

A. 1/4

B. 4/49

C. 1/49

D. 4

E. 1

Am I missing something?

(1/7) / (7/4) is equivalent to (1/7)(4/7) = 4/49 which is not in any of the answer choices...

I'm guessing this 1 / 7/(7/4) => 1 / (7*4/7) = 1/4

Is the answer 1/4? I'm confused. If you solve the problem with a calculator as it's written you get 0.08163265...

Maybe I'm having a lapse, but why can you change the eq'n to 1/(7*4/7)? Doesn't that change the order of operations?

MsStephanie... your answer is not wrong.... it all depends on how that question is formatted... interpretation.
This question should ideally require a pic rather than formatting it by typing it out.
See attached... two different scenarios.... appear to be the same.

IMHO Experimental questions need not always be easy like the post's 1st question. Infact, practically speaking, no need to experiment with such a question - it can straightaway be put in the 'easy' bucket.

ETS may throw a 'new' question (to find out thru the experiment) how tough or how easy the queston is.
