Whether you compare number of married couples or the incomes, E sounds good. But I have also seen the usage mentioned in (C)
I believe C can be choosen for conciseness.

To be honest I liked E better than C. But I cant defend C well. What is source of this question?

Oh I have a bunch from internet. Vstudy they call it. resembles closely to GMAT I guess

Anand,
I still think E is better than C...

the 'that' in E makes it clear that now incomes are significantly more as compared to what it was two decades earlier.

C seems to be the case of oranges (income) being worngly comapared with apples (decades).

Would like to know your view on this.

Vivek,

C is better than E.

"that" cannot be used with plural "incomes".

Given the options, C is the best choice.
