Hello
Do we need to show Extracurricular activities for executive MBA programs? specifically Kellogg Executive MBA program? I thought Full time program stresses on Extracurricular, gmat score etc but executive programs stress on work experience, recos etc. What if one does not have that much Extracurricular activities will that be considered as negative point on executive mba application? can you shed some light?

Interesting question! It's helpful to understand the reason why extracurriculars are important to Admissions Committees and given weight in the applications.

Often younger candidates who are applying to full-time programs have not had many opportunities to demonstrate leadership in their job setting, simply because of where they are in their career.

In those cases, the community service and/or strong extracurricular activities can given the AdCom a sense of, and a way to understand/measure, your leadership ability and style. So that's one reason why people with intersting leadership experiences outside of work tend to be more competitive; it gives the AdCom more evidence to conclude that this person is a strong candidate.

For an EMBA, perhaps you already have lots of examples of your leadership abilities at work: leading teams, rallying troops, getting people focused on achieving a specific goal, harnessing the skills of others to have an impact on your workplace. If that's true, then you will need to use these data points to demonstrate your leadership abilities.

But don't forget that both MBA and EMBA applications are a competitive situation -- if 80% of your competition does have strong extra-curriculars/community service leadership and you don't, then all else being equal, they will have stronger applications in the eyes of most AdComs.

So the question becomes will it hurt you? That depends on the specific schools and the competitiveness of the particular programs that you're applying to.

The good news is that likely this won't hurt you as much as if you were applying to a FT MBA. However is it nonetheless a factor that goes into the overall "calculation" about you as a candidate.

Hope that helps! Feel free to PM me or call me if you'd like to discuss this further.

Best wishes for success with your MBA campaign and your broader career.

Cheers, Chris
