Extra Time On Practice Qs? Anyone Else Dealt With This? [#permalink]

Hi all,

I've been doing a fair amount of practice questions and I am finding that I'm finishing the GMAT with SIGNIFICANT time to spare. For example, I just got done with a sentence completion practice set and got 80% correct out of 50 questions, but I left almost 9-10 minutes on the table.

Firstly, I wanted to check if allowing myself 90 minutes total was a fair estimate. I figured that since I normally have 75 mins for 41 Qs, I should get ~90 mins to do 50 and I wanted to check if that's correct. The second thing is that I'm wondering if anyone else has ever had this issue come up and what they'd recommend to fix it? I feel like I could probably get another 2-3 right if I didn't go as fast and make a careless mistake, but aside from maybe 2-3 Questions, I really don't feel like I need any extra time. Any suggestions about what to do?

Thanks

Hi wannabeCPA, you brought up a whole bunch of things:

• Sentence Correction should generally be the least time-consuming of the three verbal question types. So if you're doing only SC questions, that's not very representative of the real GMAT where you will see more time-consuming question types.
• Remember that the real GMAT is adaptive, so when you start doing well, the GMAT will select harder, more time-consuming questions just for you! If you're just doing 50 randomly-selected questions for practice and you're doing well, it's likely that the questions you see on the real GMAT will be harder. Take a practice CAT if you want to really be sure your pacing is fast.
• I wouldn't describe leaving 9-10 minutes on the table as an "issue" - it's only an issue if by doing so, you are also missing some low-level questions because of carelessness. In a vacuum, having time remaining isn't a problem, it's a gift!

You might like the MGMAT GMAT Roadmap book - it guides you through some of these timing issues. Check out the first couple of chapters (for free - see link) and see if it helps.
