I wouldn't consider it a waste of time. Doing extracurricular activities that you actually like doing and want to do are the ultimate "help, can't hurt" things for the resume. If nothing else, at least your having fun with what your doing.

Better late than never... but pursue something you are passionate about, don't sign up for the first thing that comes your way just to make your resume look better..
