In an attempt to both improve my public speaking and bolster my MBA application, I have joined a local Toastmaster club. On top of that, I've taken an officer position as the "Treasurer". Is this club common amongst applicants? How might it be viewed? Personally, I think it's perfect for future executives--Leadership and Communication rolled into one. Thoughts?

Toastmaster is a great organization and relatively well regarded. At my current company Toastmasters are allowed to bypass some trainings we have that deal with presentation skills.

It is, however one of those organizations that will benefit you more based on what you take away from it rather than from simply having it on your resume. In other words, it'll benefit you quite a bit in the interview in terms of being able to answer the questions and to be composed. It won't, however automatically get you into schools.

No it's not that common among applicants. <5%.

Would it be suffiicient to at least partially demonstrate oustide interests, dedication, teamwork/leadership skills?

Yes it could be used to partially demonstrate all of those. Naturally to demonstrate the last two -- teamwork and leadership, you'd have to explain how it demonstrates those attributes either through an essay or the interview. Unless, you won some type of award through Toastmaster, which would indicate Leadership.

I was referring to the officer position as an example of leadership potential--Not sure if you were speaking of the the club experience in general with your response.

Whoops. Yes I was referring to general membership. The officer position definitely could be construed as leadership.
