"F" from Community College Course during High School [#permalink] New post 23 Jul 2008, 09:12
In preparation for my applications, I requested transcripts from my undergrad as well as any one-off courses I took at local community colleges in the summer. I just recieved my transcript from one of the Community Colleges and saw I had an F! I completely forgot about this. It was a course I took in the final semester of my senior year of high school. However, I never actually took the course but dropped it too late (I was stupid back then) so they gave me an F but it shows (3.00) hours in parenthesses because I didn't complete the course/attempt the hours.

Should this be a concern to me? I could call them and argue it but I don't know how good it will do considering it's been over 7 years. My undergrad transcript does not count this F in the "retained" GPA. Also, my overall GPA is strong if that makes a difference. (3.8; 4.0 last 2.5 years)

Thanks!

CPG,

I don't think you need to sweat it. With a 3.8, I doubt any programs will doubt your academic dedication or prowess. If a program did have access to the information, it is an easy explanation on your part, and your previous grades lend credence to your explanation much more so than someone who had, say, a 2.5 throughout school. If it is not reflected in your GPA, you may not even have to mention it.

I would be careful about this. If it does not show up on your other transcript, this may be a reason that you need to make sure to include the transcript from the community college. Just check with the schools (HBS, for example, told me that if a class from another school, such as a community college, is not on my main university transcript, to include a separate transcript). But either way, I think that if your "real" transcript shows a 3.8, and especially if the F was during a class in high school, you'll be fine. At most, you might just need to include a line or two in the "Additional Information" section about the F and when it occurred in your academic career.

No offense, but I think you guys are paranoid. You got a single "F", for a class you took during high school, yet you still managed a 3.8 GPA overall?

Not only would I not sweat it, I wouldn't even mentioned it. I mean, it happened, what? 8+ years ago?

I think you'd look pretty silly if you took the time to address it.

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't think it was that big of a deal considering it was over 7 years ago and given my GPA. My Undergrad transcript does not list the transfer courses, but it does list the transfer hours/GPA. Will I still need to submit the community college transcripts for the application?
