My choice is C.

The originial sentence is wrong because you want to compete directly not directly compete (which could mean there is an indirectly compete).

C is right, because:

it's
-grammatically correct (idiom "so that")
-concise ( "compete directly"; "they do not")

Should be C.

Others are hopeless!

A) incorrect to be form
B) wordy and also "them" is ambiguous.
C) CORRECT!
D) changes the meaning by using competitive
E) needless -ing form.

C it is...
But as per Khurana, even i m worried...is it so simple...
i guess the same thing happened with me in my first attempt at GMAT... When i got some silly stupid and easy questions, i spent a lot of time reading them to make sure, it was really simple and there was no conspiracies behind it

:-D Sorry for confusing you guys, no doubt it is 'C'!

I agree with you all, many times we fall pray to simple SCs, but we need to be confident on why should we eliminate all choices but one.

But very good work by all!

I fell into trap of "so as...... to be..." in A. I did not even bothered to read other choices. Then after seeing the OA,I realized my mistake.

Lesson learnt: Always read all the choices.
