hi all,

I have something to ask: I failed a subject twice in university, 8 years ago - Information Modelling, due to a variety of factors... I also have an average GPA too (4.6 on a 7 scale). The good news is I did a double bachelor's and have an IT and a Business bachelors from a good australian university. My majors were information systems and e-commerce.

However my post-uni work experience is very strong., with an international focus and in an unusual field of IT (business intelligence) for an MBA applicant.

The ironic thing is, the subject I failed is the stuff I do every day in my career to date!

My question is: how badly would this be looked upon? There are good reasons for it (working 25 hours a week and had some very big personal problems at the time).

thanks

It sounds like you have some strong characteristics that will help off set a low GPA and failed class. I would recommend discussing this is your optional essay, but make sure not to "make excuses". I would take full responsiblity for the low grades and not attribute it to outside factors. I would show that this is a subject that you're extremely familiar with and that this is not representative of your abilities... etc etc... it sounds like you have a lot in your profile to tell and Adcom this.

Also, if you've been out of school for a long time, this could really be a small issue. I would quickly address it and move on. Good luck!

Hi n2739178,

Admissions teams will look at your undergraduate record, and your failed classes will be considered. However, there are ways to address this issue. I recommend you read this case study of a candidate with a low GPA who was accepted into Columbia and Chicago Booth:
