(C) (D) and (E) are out as we should use either
greater than
or
as great as

Once a sentence begins with "few people realize that" it should be logically follwed by so fact and not a possibility.

(B) is the best as far as the meaning is concerned.

Agree with D.
I have the feeling the hurdle here is based on exotic variations around as...as...than

Nothing to deal with that point but if both sentences were ok (in terms of grammar) would you choose may or might in this case ?
