Finally in the 700 club:)) [#permalink] New post 07 Aug 2008, 22:04
Hello Guys,

Finally I got 700 in my third trial (M48 V38). I had 660 in each time in my previous exams so this was kind of my last shot at GMAT. I was hoping for 710-720 but I guess there is not much difference.

After my second disappointment of 660 I really put my head down and studies hard for both sides. I did not get much use from Kaplan 800 but I got OG 10th edition instead of 11th ed. and the supplements. This book and the explanations in it are way better than OG11. Then I did 1000SC which I recommend to everybody. It certainly improves speed and accuracy.

Exam day;

The essay part was easy. I got through them with no problem. Then I got to Math. Questions in the quant section were noting like GMATPREP or OG or any other practice material. It got me off my game with first questions. Most of the questions were word problems and word problem DS questions. Lots of geometry and number theory. And the way the questions were constructed was really different than the questions in the practice material. In my opinion GMAT is getting wierder each day:)) Anyway with some dissappointment I got through Quant.

Contrary to quant, verbal was a breeze. Especially reading..I was really on top of verbal questions. For SC and CR nothing out of the ordinary. So I was really pleased with the verbal section overall. Actually I thought I would get higher than 38.

BTW...I got to talk to a fellow GMAT taker.. His score was 48M 36V and still got 700. How can this be??? Does somebody know how many mistakes in verbal get you a 38?

Thanks to everybody in the club for their help.
Now it is time for applications.

Take care

Congrats, emirtumen! Good luck with your apps!

Perhaps, this other person had both 48 and 36 very strong, and so managed to get 700 too. There was the table somewhere on this forum; according to it, the least possible verbal for Q48 in order to get a 700 is V37...

Congratulations on the great score.
What material would you suggest for improving quant section? Then do you think practicing fro OG and GMATprep is not worth?

Hi,
I am not saying GMATPrep or OG does not prepare you. But My Gmatprep experience is that quant can be so different in terms of questions compared to the ones in the practice material. My first suggestion would be "make your basic knowledge strong". So whatever the computer throws at your during quant you will have some idea as to how to handle the question. I think another important point is to develop a certain solution technique to certain problems. Number theories, percentages, word problems, algebra. If you can approach them systematically then your job becomes easier. My first quant score was 44 then I purchased the gmatclub tests. My quant shot up to 49 after one month. So I really recommend them. Gmatclub tests and gmatclub forum questions will definitely carry you to 48+.

Take care

Hello;

Thanks all for the wishes. I just started applications. Lots of essays:))))
Anyway after my verbal dropped in my second exam (from 37 to 31) I bought OG 10th edition and worked on SC1000. I believe if you work out these questions meticulously and learn the concepts behind SC questions and participate in the GMATclub froms I dont see why you cannot get 40. The weird thing is in my third exam I thought i nailed verbal section. But I got 38 at the end. Anyway, this is my advice.

Take care
