Hi
I am done with my GMAT exam for the time being and got a descent (supposedly) 710. The breakup was 49 Quant and 37 Verbal. Thought of sharing my experience with you all.
I started my GMAT preparation approximately three months back in July and that was the time when I joined this forum . I had a few resources at my disposal such as
1. MGMAT 8 books
2. OG12 and Verbal and Quant 2nd edition
3. Kaplan 800
4. Aristotle SC and RC
5. Power score CR

After exhausting almost all the preparation materials I gave the sample test. My GMAT Prep scores were
1. 690 (50, 33) on 15th Oct 2012
2. 710 (50, 35) on 23rd Oct 2012

On the day of the exam I got an AWA, which talked about ice-cream parlour in a cold region. I suppose it is on the pdf list already available on this forum. I never checked it though. It went pretty well. The IR section was tough as in the time was too less to attempt all the 12 questions. Most probably I sucked on that one. I took my break of full 8 minutes

Quant was way too easy, I mean easier than the GMAT prep. I realized midway, after getting successive easy questions that I may have committed mistakes. I finished the quant section 5 minutes before the end time. I took my break of full 8 minutes again.

Verbal was tough. I got easy RC but very tough CR and SC. In CR the questions were mostly from argument evaluation and assumption. I got so nervous by the end that I started expecting somewhere around 650 as my first GMAT score but all’s well that ends well. I am not too happy with my score and would like reappear for the exam.

Should I reappear or concentrate on my application?
Got any suggestions?

Man this is pretty decent score. Just as the above posts say, go with the applications.
And yeah, it would be great if you please let me know how did you prepare for the RC. Also did you face any of the parallel reasoning questions?

710 is a good score man, start with ur application process.Which colleges are u targetting?
Can u answer my below queries:
What kind of questions did u encounter during the exam, especially in quant.Which topics u feel one should stress more on in quant?
Do u think the level of difficulty was the same as that of gmatprep exam?
I am finding OG13 newly added quant questions( last 30) quite difficult.Do you feel the difficulty level was thereabout?

Thanks,
Shreeraj

Hi Shreeraj

I am unsure of the colleges right now as I am not sure where I would stand a chance.

As far as I remember I encountered questions from probability, coordinate, geometry, number properties, and venn diagram. I cannot say one is more important than another but Number properties, even and odds can trap you some time.
Yes the level was almost same with the GMAT Prep. Last 30 questions are the highest level question and you will encounter those on your route to 750, so if you are getting those questions be happy that you are doing well. I dint get any.

Hi

I think you can present a solution to my prob.
I started my gmat prep last year fell in the trap of coachg institutes.....no concept was developed.I thought of preparing on my own.
I purchased Powerscore CR and Sc went thru all ... found intresting.
I work on ship , i am second Officer, I took loads of book on my last assignment was difficult to study but managed.
I got down in july started again.......till than i did not knw about Gmat forum.....
I prepared and appeared for MGMAT was scoring around 610, 620 my target is 650 it hought can achieve.......gave GMAT prep 540 by than i had booked my date as sept 1 eyeing R1 ISB and US b schools......
I thought of facing the exam ...

Quant was quite easy untill question 20... than started the real test while i was on q 29 time to go was 9 min ...things started collapsing....
But worse to happen was waiting the center co ordinator informed in the break i hav lost 3 min of Verbal section WOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Coffin was nailed... just guessed all jai mata di A , B hahha
Result
410 Q 34 V 15

I jooined Gmat forum after and than GROCKIT purchased MGMAT quant books preparing full time]
but still score pondering over MGMAT 600 , 640

I have finished both OG 11, 12 3 times..........
I am totally lost how to go about know........

What i meant was besides the OG12 materials, where do you suggest to practice from?
for example, I find the CR questions in OG12 not that hard. is it enough to practice CR from the OG or should I seek more practice?
thanks

For CR I would refer Powerscore CR.
SC - For practice you can have Aristotle SC

Hi Marcab

I never prepared for the RC. I have always found making notes while reading the passage as a best way of approaching RC. On the day of the exam I got very long but easy passages and taking notes was actually a waste of time. I would suggest you to practice from OG.

As far as I remember there was 1 parallel reasoning question.

Hi Yashii
Thanks for the wishes!

I am responding here for others to see, hope you do not mind.

I did not get my IR score. It will come with the official report I suppose.

Study schedule
First month - Solved the full OG 12, Quant and Verbal 2nd edition
Second month - Quants prep from TIME material (CAT - India) and I studied the theory from MGMAT series
Third month - CR from Powerscore ; SC from EGMAT and Aristotle

I was not on sabbatical but tried to find out time during office hours to discuss on this forum all the questions of CR and SC.

Hi Aristocrat

Thanks a lot for the wishes

First of all I would like to cite that there has been a recent change in the way SC question is developed. I suppose the GMAC has started emphasizing more on meaning now. For that OG guide is definitely not enough. I would suggest you to go for an online SC course and study the MGMAT SC book. They are good enough.

For CR, Powerscore bible is a MUST. OG cannot suffice. Let me know more so that I can help accordingly

No. definitely not. The emphasis on meaning NOW is more that it was in the past. There were options which could be rejected because it changed the meaning of the sentence. Grammatical errors were tough to spot (at least for me).
