First attempt 720, need to retake? [#permalink]
23 Apr 2012, 07:49
Hi all,
I just finished my GMAT on Friday and got 720 with a pretty equal split between Verbal and Quant (my verbal was just a little higher). I have been studying a bit for a few months and really dug in my heels at the end, even though it was a little difficult with a full time job.
I don't have a business background and will probably only have 2 years by the time I apply to MBA programs. I have an arts undergraduate degree from McGill (double major International Development and Psychology) and am looking to apply to MBA programs at Rotman (U of T), Roger's (Ryerson) and Schulich (York).
Given my lack of business experience should I be retaking it to strengthen my application? I know I could do a lot better if I work a bit more at it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

First of all congratulations on that score, you really deserve it. a 720 can get you a shot at some of the top MBA programs in the world. If you are content with your score, then by all means stick with the score, but if you have an ambition of wanting to attain a very very high score, then study and aim for a score greater than 720. The choice is yours. Still once again, congratulations.
PS: Focus on building a very strong application profile (with work experience, leadership, extra curricular activities, etc) and also get some strong recommendations

I'd focus on other parts of your application.. A 720 is a great score and there is no need to retake with such a high score. You are in the medians for any school. The only argument to retake is if you think you can get a significantly better score and if your application will be very weak in other areas.

definately no need to retake, especially if V and Q was an even split, spend the extra time building other aspects of your application.
For the schools you are targeting, Rotman (U of T), Roger's (Ryerson) and Schulich (York), you are above the median GMAT already by a good 20-30 points. At 2 years work experience, strong GMAT, decent work experience and extra curriculars, you should have a good shot at all your targets.
Good luck.

I am currently attending a business school where the admissions office will show you your file if you request it. After reviewing my file, I realized that my GMAT score didn't matter too much in the grand scheme of things. The admissions office also wasn't too impressed with my work experience. However, I had a really good letter of recommendation from a manager that ultimately helped me get admitted.
The lesson here. Don't worry about a few points here and there. It's more important to assemble a good admissions file and tell a good story with your personal statement and letters of recommendation.

First let me congratualte you for great score! coming back to your question, I wouyld say even if you are shooting for Ivy's this score is pretty good to go.. please focus on other aspect of grand scheme.. ROI on the latter is definataly better! Rest is up to you if you wan to turn the wheel again then who stops you to do so... but keep alwyas the gerat game plan you have for yourself good luck for things to follow!
