First in family to attend college - relevant app detail? [#permalink]

I've been reading in the Montauk and Isiadinso books that one relevant factor to disclose in your application in that you're the first in your family to attend college. I suppose I'm a little dubious of that, but I'm obviously not going to walk away from factors that might be helpful to me in the admissions process.
I'm curious if some of the forum members (particularly those that have been involved in the admissions process at a school) could help me think through the following:
1) Is this a relevant detail in the app process, or is it worthwhile to disclose if it isn't being used in the context of telling a story (in an essay, for instance)?
2) Where is the appropriate place to place this in an application? I've read to put it on your resume, but I'm really having trouble writing:
School - GPA - Activities - First in family to attend college
because it doesn't seem to fit there particularly well.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Hope everyone is enjoying his/her summer.

I'd put it in one of your essays. Something like "As the first one to attend college, I was ready to take advantage of the numerous opportunity School XYZ offered me for my undergrad studies." That's badly written, but you get the gist.
