First time taking the GMAT- Questions [#permalink] New post 10 Apr 2010, 06:07
I'm taking the GMAT for the first time next week and I have some questions.

1. Is the tutorial before the test timed as part of the test or is it an additional time?

2. If the tutorial is additional time, is it permissible to write notes on your scratch sheet DURING the tutorial time?

3. How often do most people have to request additional scratch sheets?

4. I've heard conflicting reports that the 2 writing essays actually don't count as part of your GMAT score. Is this true. I've heard they are additional grades to the 550,600, etc. grade you earn.If so, how should I approach these essays?

5. Do we go in with the school codes or can we select our program from a pull down window as part of the pre or post test?

That's all I can think of right now- Thanks.

Yes, you will have 1 minute that does not count towards your 75 minutes

2. If the tutorial is additional time, is it permissible to write notes on your scratch sheet DURING the tutorial time?

Yes

3. How often do most people have to request additional scratch sheets?

As many times as you want. But remember, you are not working on scratch paper but rather glossy booklets. You would have to ask for another booklet

4. I've heard conflicting reports that the 2 writing essays actually don't count as part of your GMAT score. Is this true. I've heard they are additional grades to the 550,600, etc. grade you earn.If so, how should I approach these essays?

Essays are not part of the 200-800 scoring, however, that doesn't mean you should ignore them. Essays are scored separately and the score will be emailed to you 1-2 weeks after the exam. You should still show some level of writing proficiency. Look around the GMAT Club forum here. I believe there are good tips on how to approach the essays.

5. Do we go in with the school codes or can we select our program from a pull down window as part of the pre or post test?

Schools are chosen before the exam starts, not after. You don't need to take in the school code. You will be able to search for schools

That's all I can think of right now- Thanks.

Excellent, I am pretty novice at GMAT. However I have been able to finally put my act together and land on it.

I took my first test without any practice and got the following score (First Practice Test - Princeton Review GMAT CAT 1) :

Maths : 31
Verbal : 17

I would request someone with experience with GMAT test/strategy/course to please respond how I should go about working from here (also created error log, most math problems answered in correctly were either misread or miscalculations of numbers).

I am targetting a 700+ score (so I think, but no fault of mine already admitted above that I am a GMAT Novice).

Please suggest a study plan, number of hours on weekdays & weekends and focus (I am definitely reading GMAT Fiction without fail).

And By the way "Barium" Thanks for posting this thread.

Cheers !!!

ROS.
