First timer..690 (Q49, V35) - July 27 04 [#permalink] New post 27 Jul 2004, 11:49
Hi all!

Thank you GMAT club !

I am so relieved that its finally over. Yeah, I could have done better in Verbal..but am somewhat happy with my score..

Sorry that this post got so long..you can tell I am excited..

Here's my experience:

Got to the test center 30 minutes early. I was the only one giving the GMAT but the room was crowded with other test takers. Anyway I settled into my corner seat and was annoyed at the fact that the screen flickered so much! (the refresh rates on these win98 equipped Pcs was 60Hz). I had experienced the same when I installed PowerPrep at home but I used to override the refresh rate manually.
Anyway, I went thru the instructions and finally began..The AWA began with an fairly easy issue . Gave it a thought for minute and just as I typed my first letter ..KABOOM! runtime error! The screen froze..I freaked..maybe I hit a wrong key or something. I raised my hand and no one showed..looked around the room and to my relief noticed everyone else had the same problem. After about 5 minutes, the invigilator showed up and shut off all the machines..she said that we would begin from where we left off ( I didnt want to lose the easy issue topic ). Finally ended up getting 35 odd minutes to think about it and wrote a decent essay.
after the AWA took the break and started quant...got a difficult DS to begin with...the second question just stumped me..spent 5 minutes but got it right..dont remember what happened with the next 4 but i was not confident at all. These questions were NOT close to any practice question I had done. reached Q 7 and behold ..probabilty..slight relief..rest of it went by in a blur..I quessed on a lot of questions and was not feeling confident at all..but managed to finish everything with 20 secs to spare.
Overall I felt I had not done well at all. I had guessed on just too many..
Anyway began the verbal little wary and got a SC to start with..then got a tough RC..after the first few questions didnt think it was going to well..so I went into a casual mode since I was giving this GMAT to just get a feel for it, my 'Real' date was supposed to be Aug 28th..finished the verbal hurrying through the last few questions..
Thought about cancelling the score for a sec but I wanted to see how I had done..to my surprise 690 popped up. Ran out of the room and collected the unofficial score ..only on my way back realised that i had done really bad in verbal..

So this turned out to be a looong story much bigger that I expected it to be ...so I'll shut up now. I planned to write about my preparation but will do so only if anyone is interested..

My other scores:
Kaplan: Diag 630, 530!, 540!, 550!
Princeton : 710, 700 , 640, 700!
PP1 : 600 (got really depressed, wife almost threw me out!)
PP2: 690 (wife lets me back in!)
800 score (night before test): 620
Actual: 690 (The score estimator on this site gave me a score of 666 so it was fairly accurate)

Thanks for the challenges Praet, Bogdan, Aejaz, and Toyvo.. They were fun.. (although my percentiles were only 80, 63 and 52!)

Phew..not planning on giving the GMAT again as I had originally planned..I have 5 years work ex..so hope this would be enough to get me somewhere..

Please share your prep strategies! I am also aiming for 690 - 710. I like to look at the various methods that people use to prepare for the test. Congrats on your score!

WhartonPlease ..nice nick!

Here is what I did over the past 35 days:

1) Started with Kaplan GMAT 2004 ..The book was alright..learned some strategies that I didnt know earlier. The CD was useful, ..got a 630 on the dignostic test..but then my scores went downhill...never scored more than 550 on the full tests! Had heard that these tests dont mean anything so didnt worry too much.

2) Next started with the Princeton review Cracking the GMAT 2004 ..I liked this better than Kaplan..fnished all practice tests..scored roughly 700 on all of the CD tests..but lot of questions were recycled..so these scores are suspect..

3)Then came the OG..but before that I wanted to give the powerprep tests to gauage my score..since all the questions are from the OG and I wanted to get a true picture of where i stood.. Did as much as could from the OG in the 2 weeks before the test. Decided to do only the last 1/3rd questions as other users had mentioned..

Some other points :

1) OG Quant is helpful but is definely easier than the real test. Some of the tough questions on the real test I had not seen on any study guide...but practice enough and you should be able to tackle most of the questions..some of the easier questions on the real test were very similar to OG questions.
2) I did NOT maintain a mistakes spreadsheet as may users here suggest..I did review my mistakes though..just didnt note them down ( one can only speculate if this would've improved my verbal score!)
3) Do not panic if you think you are not doing well on the real test. You cant really predict how well you are doing..atleast I couldnt at all...

Thats it for now! All the best for your exam...
