Dear all,

Does anyone have an injection for flu immunization (normal flu , not bird flu). I heard this vaccination quite long time ago, but is it necessary to have a shot before school starts? Please advise. Thanks.

Its pretty much a yearly shot. They really target it at the young, old, people with low immune systems, teachers, and health care people. Usually they seem to only talk about it right around the time flu season is starting. You should be fine without it as long as you are a healthy person to begin with...I dont think schools would require it.

I'm with rr - it won't be required. Though I have to say, I am a fan of the flu shot. I got a horrible case of the flu in 1996 - I was literally in bed for a week. Since then, I get the shot whenever there are enough supplies. (I won't take grandma's dose from her, of course!) Part of it is also related to my job -- I come into contact with a ton of people right at the peak of flu season. Anyway, I will plan to get one on campus -- who can afford to lose a week with the flu at b-school?

There was a shortage of flu shots here a few years ago. They had to announce to people that the flu shot would not prevent people getting bird flu (the actual source of the feverish uptake).

Please excuse that pun, btw.

There are no flu vaccines available before school starts. They are generally made around Sept /Oct when flu strains occurring that year are collected. Each year, vaccines change depending on the strains that are prevalent for that year. Last year's flu vaccines will not combat this coming year's flu.
