Fluctuating Verbal from 18 to 29 to 37, Need your expertise! [#permalink] New post 22 Dec 2013, 04:45
Hello Experts,

Hopefully I am posting at the correct place. I really need you expertise to handle this giant. Hard work has never been my problem. My problem is strategic study. Realized which is what this exam is all about. My D-day is on 10th Jan. So I have about 17 days of 24*7 attention to this as I am off from work till then.

The problem is that after 3-4 months of prep was ranging around Q46/V29 in MGMAT CAT's. I was kind of not in touch with the studies for a about a month due to work and other health reasons. I picked it up on Dec 1st and here is what happened since then --

1. I took the first ever GmatPrep test 1 on Dec 7th just to see where I am with the prep and I got Q48/V18. I lost hope in Verbal and felt totally heart broken and did not know what to do. :(

2. Reviewed full MGMAT SC book as I saw SC was the primary area where I was being killed and then I took MGMAT CAT 4 after a week on Dec 14th and got a V29/Q42 (So in verbal I was back to where I was about a month back, in quant I messed up the timing so I am currently focussing time management in specially in Q)

3. Afterwards started solving everything from OG13 in SC/CR/RC in timed situation and reviewed few weak area in quant and then I took MGMAT CAT 5 today on Dec 22nd and I got V37/Q44 (At first look I was surprised to see my verbal score but then realized that it nothing to be excited as I got few common SC/CR so the score is inflated. But the good thing is that it gave me some hope. On the quant side I am confused as I thought I managed the timing better that the previous tests but did not expect this much low score I am yet to review the exam)

Now at this point of time I would need your advise as to use the time I have as efficiently as possible. I have about 17 days*12 hrs/day = 204 hours. I am not going to get this much free time in near future again that is why I am willing to give everything I got in this attempt. So the questions I have --

1. What would be the primary source of my practice materials in Verbal. I have OG-12 to go which I am planning to get done with in next 7 days. So after I am done with OG-12/OG-13 what should I focus on the most in verbal in terms of practice materials which most closely resembles the actual exam. Btw - I learn by volume meaning if one point is hit multiple times with different questions in that case only it sticks wit me otherwise I find it hard to pull up the concept and apply it in the exam exam environment.

3. In terms of SC I am planning to get so familiar with each and every concept tested in OG12/OG13 that I can tell them even when I am sleeping. I suppose my challenge would be to recognize those patterns when given as a whole new question.

4. In terms of quant I feel I am out of materials as I have solved all the PS/DS from OG 12/13. The problem with quant is once I do a problem I tend to remember the trick next when I do it. So I was wondering whether I am being tested properly when redoing the quant problems in OG again. I am not sure which outside materials to pick for last couple of weeks which most closely resembles the real thing in Quant.

5. In terms of end to end exam prep and stamina building I am planning to take MGMAT CAT 6 and two extra gmat prep exam (Which I am planning to buy) and I am leaving Gmat prep 2 exam for the last week. I read online that people take Gmat prep exam twice just to get more questions but was wondering If I should do that as well because I feel that the score will be inflated.

6. In CR/RC I have identified few weak areas like inference/assumption which I am planning to focus on thais week.

7. Specially in case of quant I am in a dilemma that what should be my practice material and the practice strategy during last 17 days. I really feel that I can get a 50 here but just lacking the right strategy.

After being in a little bit of a depression about my verbal score, right now I am as positive as I ever could be. I am shooting for a 700. I understand that its a tough reach for me based on my current level, Yet I believe I can!!! Just need some tips about my study strategy for next couple of weeks.

Thanks so much for reading my gigantic post and taking the time to reply. Appreciate it very much.

Cheers,

Hi hustler222,

As you study OG, you may want to reference some of the video explanations provided here and compare with your current approach: http://www.gmatpill.com/official-guide

If you are looking for extra practice - you can reference these questions here: http://www.gmatpill.com/gmat-practice-t ... -questions

Your performance does seem to be all over the place - try to review the questions or sets of questions that you went through - how is it that you got so many right in the V37 version? How is it that you got so many wrong in the V18? Try to spot patterns so you can identify the types of questions that you tend to be weak in so you can be prepared when something similar pops up.

A link to a free practice test is provided in my signature. But remember - it's best to get the help/guidance that you need to make sure you are on the right track. Otherwise you can waste a lot of time just doing a bunch of practice tests.
