101. For a trade embargo against a particular country to
succeed, a high degree of both international accord
and ability to prevent goods from entering or leaving
that country must be sustained. A total blockade of
Patria’s ports is necessary to an embargo, but such an
action would be likely to cause international discord
over the embargo.
The claims above, if true, most strongly support which
of the following conclusions?
(A) The balance of opinion is likely to favor Patria in
the event of a blockade.
(B) As long as international opinion is unanimously
against Patria, a trade embargo is likely to
succeed.
(C) A naval blockade of Patria’s ports would ensure
that no goods enter or leave Patria.
(D) Any trade embargo against Patria would be likely
to fail at some time.
(E) For a blockade of Patria’s ports to be
successful, international opinion must be
unanimous.
[Reveal] Spoiler:
D

Answer is D.

Since total blockade is going to cause international discord, natural conclusion is -
Hence any trade embargo against Patria would be likely to fail at some time.

OA please. Thanks.

Option D;
for Embargo, both international accord and total blocade are necessary but the passage tells that total blocade will result in international discord, so definately there are high chances forEmbargo to fail.
what is OA

The claims above, if true, most strongly support which
of the following conclusions?
(A) --> No where mentioned in the argument
(B) --> balance of opinion is not the only criterion for success of embargo since argument says " a high degree of both international accord and ability to prevent ....that country must be sustained"
(C) Partially true
(D) Correct ! " A total blockade of Patria’s ports is necessary to an embargo, but such an action would be likely to cause international discordover the embargo.

(E) Same type of reasoning as B

Only A and D are contenders
However A talks about FAVOUR which we are not sure.As far as the facts are concerned

For a trade embargo against a particular country to succeed, a high degree of both international accord and ability to prevent goods from entering or leaving that country must be sustained. A total blockade of Patria’s ports is necessary to an embargo, but such an action would be likely to cause international discord over the embargo.

P1 - successful trade embargo - int accord + goods entering/leaving
P2 - Patria's ports total blockage necessary but will cause discord

The claims above, if true, most strongly support which of the following conclusions?

(A) The balance of opinion is likely to favor Patria in the event of a blockade.
No mention about the international opinion in the conclusion.

(B) As long as international opinion is unanimously against Patria, a trade embargo is likely to succeed.
Correct answer More general and covers all the points of the arguments

(C) A naval blockade of Patria’s ports would ensure that no goods enter or leave Patria.
No mention about the international opinion in the conclusion.

(D) Any trade embargo against Patria would be likely to fail at some time.

(E) For a blockade of Patria’s ports to be successful, international opinion must be unanimous.
Too specific - Patria's ports
