I vote for (E).

1. What began is the year, not England. Thus, (B) and (C) are out.

2. "during a 100 years" is not idiomatic. The correct usage is "during + event" or "for + time". Thus, (D) is out.

3. In (A), "its" is ambigious. Thus, (A) is out.

[quote="Antmavel"]For almost a hundred years after having its beginning in 1788, England exiled some 160,000 criminals to Australia.

(A) For almost a hundred years after having its beginning in 1788
>> No. Doesn't sound right.

(B) Beginning in 1788 for a period of a hundred years
>> No. Suggests that the beginning took a hundred years.

(C) Beginning a period of almost a hundred years, in 1788
>> No. Again, suggests the beginning took 100 years instead of sending prisoners over a hundred year period.

(D) During a hundred years, a period beginning in 1788
>> No. Not correct.

(E) Over a period of a hundred years beginning in 1788
Yes. This suggests that prisoners were sent to Australia over a period of 100 years beginning in 1788.
