For example, a answer choice says, qualified approbation, to describe the authors tone. I didn't know what approbation meant...any advice how to deal with a situation like that?

basically means it's asking is the author's tone praising of the subject?

approbation n. approval, sanction; assent, consent; praise

Yes billy, I looked it up now, but assuming I didn't have a dictionary on test day how would one deal with something like this...I think it is sort of unfair that GMAT tests something like this.
