A , B and C are wrong for using they where usage of it( cost) was required
confused between D and E
usage of would looks right will go with E

I gill go with E

In A, B, C - it is not clear what "they" is referring to. "would" is required to correctly refer to the cost.

For many travelers, charter vacations often turn out to cost considerably more than they originally seemed.
(A) they originally seemed - wrong modifier
(B) they originally seem to - wrong modifier
(C) they seemingly would cost originally - wrong modifier and 'seemingly' changes meaning
(D) it seemed originally - compares cost with charter vacations.
when we say x costs more than y . then we compare y and cost . so it should be x costs more than y does.

(E) it originally seemed they would - correct

IMO E.

'charter vacations ' is plural so we need 'they' ..D and E are out.

C is awkward.

it is between A and B. I chose B thinking 'turn out to ' and 'seem to' are in parallel. but after seeing OA as A .. it made sense. we need a past verb here to reflect the past time.

I'm not sure between A and B also,
At first I thought we shouldn't omit "to"
OA is A, so we can omit "to" ?

I think OA in 1000 SC is incorrect.
It was discussed earlier and OA is E.

Also, can you please let me know where can I find the answers to 1000 SC ques. I just found questions on internet.

I think answer should be B....A is wrong because it used "seemed" past tense. Another think, could you pls give me the 1000Sc questions and if anyone can provide the solutions that will be great.

Re: Charter vacations. [#permalink] New post 13 Aug 2009, 04:01
there has been lot of discussion but whats the final answer... ?
In option E -
if 'it' refers to cost then 'they ' refers to ??
it is unclear as to what they refer to and it refer to....

I prefer B because IMO, they refer to charter vacations ( as they turned out to be costly than they originally thought of )
and seemed because they thought of vacations' cost in the past...hence originally seemed.....

Please tell me where I am going wrong in my explanation....

For many travelers, charter vacations often turn out to cost considerably more than they originally seemed.

If you complete the sentence according to A & B booth -

(A) For many travelers, charter vacations often turn out to cost considerably more than they originally seemed to cost.

(B) For many travelers, charter vacations often turn out to cost considerably more than they originally seem to cost.

Now you can clearly see that B is wrong and A clearly indicates the meaning. A is correct. I originally went for B but then I found why is it wrong.

D & E are singular, costs is plural.
C distorts the meaning
B seem is the wrong tense.
A it is.

Well refer to the attached document page 24, it is clearly explained, it is a condition of "THE EXPLETIVE ‘IT", this document is not owned by me, it is prepared by someone named 'pshail', much recommended by many in SC preparation. Credits goes to 'pshail'. Still if you dont get it , let me know.
