. For next year, the Chef’s Union has requested a 10 percent salary increase for each of its members, whereas the Hotel Managers’ Union has requested only an 8 percent salary increase for each of its members. These facts demonstrate that the average dollar amount of the raises that the Chefs’ Union has requested for next year is greater than that of the raises requested by the Hotel Managers’ Union.
Which one of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?
(A) The Chefs’ Union has many more members than does the Hotel Managers’ Union.
(B) The Chefs’ Union is a more powerful union than is the Hotel Managers’ Union and is therefore more likely to obtain the salary increases it requests
(C) The current salaries of the members of the Chefs’ Union are, on average, higher than the current salaries of the members of the Hotel Managers’ Union
(D) The average dollar amount of the raises that the members of the Chefs’ Union received last year was equal to the average dollar amount of the raises that the members of the Hotel Managers’ Union received
(E) The members of the Chefs’ Union received salary increases of 10 percent in each of the last two years, while the members of the Hotel Managers’ Union received salary increases of only 8 percent in each of the last two years

C is the only answer that explains that 10% of x is higher than 8% of y since x>y

Re: CR salary raises [#permalink] New post 07 Jul 2004, 11:04
Will go with C on this one
The dollar amount will be higher only if the percentage of the av current salary for Chef's is higher
D is wrong. The average dollar amount raise last yr doesn't help to evaluate their percentage increases. For percentage increase we need to know the principal amount which is their individual salaries

C yes. it gives you the base and the higher rate which helps in making sure that increment for chef's is more than manager's.

D does not help us with this.

simple one. definitely C.

only problem is salary increment in dollars.

probelm given in percentage.

percentage of increase does not reflect actual increase unless salaries are more. (can be get through a mathematical equation)

10%*x > 8 % *y

where x is avg . salary of chef
y is avg. salary of manager.

for this atleast the salary of chef x > 0.8*y

C says x > y

C solves the problem and hence strengthen the conculsion.

(C) for sure,

IF the average is high then definetly the a high percentage(10%) of that high value will be higher than the low percentage (8%) of the low value
