the difference between B and E is in the phrase "increasing difficulty "

increasing difficulties is not required here, just because the pigeons are many in number, "increasing difficulty" describes what the all the pigeons suffer, the plural is not required.

Hence Choice is B

I think that error is more to do with using increasing ( continuous tense) compared with increased, which is better.

I couldn't understand how using the plural difficulties introduces an error.

present perfect tense is used for an action that extends from past to present. Here, it's been proved that if we remove the olfactory organs of a pigeon, it will find difficulty in homing. past --> still valid.

E entails present continuous tense. Does that mean difficulty is increasing steadily?? that doesn't hold good.
I don't think 'difficulties plays any role here in chosing the answer.

First, "increasing" in E is not right. Simply put, you compare two sets of data: one in which birds have little difficulty in homing and the other in which birds have more difficulty. The difficulty is "enreased", not "encreasing."
Seconds, "difficulty" should be used here.

I believe that were means that the action has happend in the past and finished, while the experimaent is still valid until now so we have to use the past percfet. I hope this will help. :-D

Very easy question. You just need to pay attention to the words carefully.

Since denotes ongoing/present perfect tense. Therefore, choices BE remain.

Homing is singular. Therefore difficulties is wrong.

OA must be B.

Hi teaserbae

let me try,

For some birds the sense of smell appears (prsent tense) to play a role in navigation, since pigeons with surgically removed olfactory nerves were found to have increased difficulties in homing.

'with surgically removed olfactory' - is a modifier, modifying 'pigeons' (these are the special pigeons whose olafactory nerves have been removed)

(A) were found to have increased difficulties - use of past tense is incorrect.
(B) have been found to have increased difficulty - correct choice

Hope it helps.

Not clear to me why past tense is impossible here. If we take the perspective of the actual finding, we must be able to speak about a finished event. The finding took place and isnt still ongoing. The construction "were found" is not a rarity in research article reviews.

1. The original source is not GMAT Pill. This is a question from the now banned 1000 series.

2. As the Main clause is a generalization that is given in present tense, the subordinate clause also should follow a present tense format. Hence, all the choices using past tense or past perfect, namely A, C and D can be safely removed.

3. Between B and E, E may be dropped using ‘increasing difficulties’ meaning that the difficulties are still on-going even after homing. Secondly the use of plural 'difficulties' as if there are several types or kinds of difficulties is incorrect.

B is the correct choice for using the appropriate ‘increased difficulty’. Also, note that ‘difficulties’ has been amended to ‘difficulty.’

Hi,
why is the 1000 series banned ?

Hi,

They aren't banned. The original sources of many questions aren't entirely clear, which may cause some to approach the "1000 series" questions with caution. However, most of the questions are perfectly fine, so I'd suggest using them for practice. You can find them all in one post here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/complete-100 ... 12440.html
