Among A,C and E, I am going with with A. i don not have any reason other than parallel construction and tense.
A. providing them with high-energy feed, and milking them regularly, Holstein cows are producing

E - Tricky question!
For the farmer who takes care to keep them cool, providing them with high-energy feed, and milking them regularly, Holstein cows are producing an average of 2,275 gallons of milk each per year.
A. providing them with high-energy feed, and milking them regularly, Holstein cows are producing
###Bad parallelism - cool ~ providing ~ milking
B. providing them with high-energy feed, and milked regularly, the Holstein cow produces
###Bad parallelism - cool ~ providing ~ milking
C. provided with high-energy feed, and milking them regularly, Holstein cows are producing
###Bad parallelism - cool ~ provided ~ miling
D. provided with high-energy feed, and milked regularly, the Holstein cow produces
###Parallelism is fixed. But singular/plural issue.
E. provided with high-energy feed, and milked regularly, Holstein cows will produce
###Correct. Fixes both parallelism and subject-pronoun agreement.
###Correct parallism is - cool ~ provided ~ milked

we need plural cows.
B/W A and E
I go with E. Because in A present participle is not parallel, but I cannot explain choice E.
The Past participle is also weird.

For the farmer who takes care-> This is in present tense.
In choice E provided with high-energy feed, and milked regularly the verbs are in past-tense.
I am confused how this can be parallell as explained by Mckenna.
Vithal, gmat2me can you folks explain. ( I am not saying that E is the answer, I am just trying to understand your logic).
I don't think this is testing parallelism.

Please explain your answer.
I am no expert, but I read the statement, as "For the farmer who takes care to keep them cool, provided...milked...the cows will produce"
I see this as a first conditional "if a farmer takes care then the cows will produce" -- only E adheres to this
I don't think it is because of the parallelism as in McKenna's explanation
A. providing them with high-energy feed, and milking them regularly, Holstein cows are producing
The sentence should have been "For the farmer taking care...cows are producing"
B. providing them with high-energy feed, and milked regularly, the Holstein cow produces
Subj-Pronoun and subj.-verb disagreement (should be cows and produce)
C. provided with high-energy feed, and milking them regularly, Holstein cows are producing
are producing will need "taking care"
D. provided with high-energy feed, and milked regularly, the Holstein cow produces
same as B
E. provided with high-energy feed, and milked regularly, Holstein cows will produce
The best answer

Vithal: How about this explanation?
E) is the correct choice:
For the farmer who takes care to keep them cool, (who) provided with high-energy feed, and (who) milked regularly Holstein cows will produce ...
rest of the choices do not fit in this paradigm.
I wish the first part said "For the farmer who took care to keep them cool", then the verb tenses will also be parallel.
Other than this, Choice E has proper Pronoun agreement and S-V agreement.

not sure...
because, if the sentence were For the farmers who took..... then it should have been "the cows would produce" rather than will produce, as per my understanding of the conditionals - but as this is not a conditional in the first place, I wouln't bet on the above!

By parallelism I meant all three of them are adjectives - cool ~ provided ~ milked. Since they are used as adjectives(participle or whatever is the right name), they need not match the tense of main sentence.
Vithal, Nicolis, this is the parallel structure I was refering to:
For the farmer who takes care to keep them cool, to keep them provided with high-energy feed, to keep them milked regularly, Holstein cows will produce.....
What do you guys think? I'm convinced.

E is the best choice here. The sentence sets out a list of conditions nescessary for the cow to produce 2275gallons of milk a year. Thus, we will need 'will produce' because the cows haven't produce them yet, at least, not until the conditions sets in.

"Them" is redundant so A,B choices are eliminated.
Its a conditional statement which would be typically of type
"if you study now you will fare well in your test"
So a sentence having 2 tenses is not flawed....
E is a better choice ...So picked that one

What a great expanation Mckenna! Now I understand what you are saying and I think you are right. It never struck me to read the sentence like that even after a thorough analysis.
Thanks Vithal, gmat2me, ywilfred, chunjuwu, others for a great discussion.
OA is infact E

Two verifications on this great discussion.
Basically, this is a conditional sentence requiring "will" to fulfill the conditional/dependent sentence structure.
Can someone explain the usage of cool, provided, and milked on this one? Are these use as some form of adjective, pronousn or whatever???

I still don't get it why "provided" and "milked" are adjectives here? they seem like Verb to me.
Would you clarify for me?

I think Choice E is stated incorrectly.
It should say:
. provided with high-energy feed, and milked regularly, Holstein cows produce
and may be then it becomes the correct choic?
