I had toi choose between C and E and went with C because I should not be changing the meaning of the original sentence. The original sentence says that the technique is an attempt to portray 3D in 2D.... E says that painters use it to (successfully) portray the painting in 2D...
Can someone pls explain what I am missing? Thanks.

if C was "painters use for trying to portray", would it have been correct?

Official Explanation

Answer E
- This sentence describes a particular technique used by painters. Since using the technique is their attempt, any words suggesting that painters are trying or attempting to portray three dimensions are redundant. Eliminate (A), (B), (C) and (D) for this reason. That leaves choice (E), which gives all the necessary information in the most concise manner.

Both (A) and (B) are not only redundant but are also unidiomatic. Used as an attempt does not work. Be wary of choices (C) and (D); although the GMAT prefers active voice, passive voice is sometimes the more concise choice. Use at, in choice (C), is unidiomatic. In choice (D), the technique is not something painters attempt to use, they simply use it.

Can you explain what you meant by above? The question says that the technique is an attempt made by painters to portray 3D in 2D..... so what are the exact redundant words you are talking abt?

I actually didn't write the explanation. I can only convey my interpretation.

IMO - Look at the definition of technique -
tech·nique noun

: a way of doing something by using special knowledge or skill
: the way that a person performs basic physical movements or skills

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/technique

"any words suggesting that painters are trying or attempting to portray" means that the words "trying" and "attempting" are synonymous with technique. So, the sentence is not concise. Removing redundant words make the sentence preferable.
