Fossils is the subject but in the second part of the sentence the sloth is the subject. hence we cannot use "it" in the second part to refer to sloth, it refers to Fossils.
E is incorrect usage of which.

Hence D is the correct option.

This is how I would go about it.

1. The subject fossils is plural and all choices containing singular verbs – has been dated in B, was dated in C and was dated in E are out in just a stroke of hand.
2. In A, although we can solace ourselves that the pronoun it logically refers to sloth, still the choice is using a wrong idiom ‘mammal of’
3. D uses right plural verb ‘have been dated,avoids the uncomfortable pronoun it and uses the right idiom mammal on
