Fox jeans regularly sell for $15 a pair and Pony jeans regularly sell for $18 a pair. During a sale these regular unit prices are discounted at different rates so that a total of $9 is saved by purchasing 5 pairs of jeans: 3 pairs of Fox jeans and 2 pairs of Pony jeans. If the sum of the two discounts rates is 22 percent, what is the discount rate on Pony jeans?

A) 9%
B) 10%
C) 11%
D) 12%
E) 15%

Brute force method is the equations approach..which is,

15*3*x/100 + 18*2*y/100=9 =>5x+4y =100
Aslo, x + y = 22

Solving the above eqn's we have y=10%

If I see any other intuitive method, I will keep you informed..

I think this is a good example where you can use the backsolve approach.

You know that Fox jeans costs $15, and Pony jeans costs $18, you also know that 3 pairs of Fox jeans and 2 pairs of Pony jeans were purchased. So

3(15) = 45 - Fox
2(18) = 36 - Pony

The total discount discount is $9 and you are asked to find the percent discount of pony jeans,

so 45(.22 - .X) + 36(.X) = 9

here you can plug in numbers starting with C,

45(.22-.11)+36(.11) = 4.95 + 3.96 = 8.91 not = 9, eliminate

Move to B, as C was too small a number so the discount should be at a greater percentage for Fox jeans because we've purchased 3 pairs..

45(.12) + 36(.10) = 9 and we've got our answer.

I tried the backsolve approach . I first tried with 10% and as the number was easy got the answer.

But Venks, when I see your solution, I realize how foolish Iam. :oops:

You guyz are just too good. Everyday is a new learning for me.
