(A) traveled through the North to exhort
(B) and he traveled through the North and exhorted
(C) and traveling through the North exhorted
(D) traveling through the North and exhorted
(E) traveling through the North and exhorting

[Reveal] Spoiler: Concern

B is wrong because of 2 reasons. The pronoun HE is not needed. ONLY 1 person fredrick douglass is being talked about in the sentence. So its already clear it is douglass who is travelling. Also in a list we include 'and' before the last item. In B there are 2 ANDS, which make the sentence grammatically incorrect. statement E is best. The later 2 clauses are subsidiary to main clause 'Frederick Douglass served as a recruiting agent'. so travelling through the north and exhorting describes what Frederick did while serving as recruiting agent.

6. Too old to bear arms himself, Frederick Douglass served as a recruiting agent, traveled through the North to exhort Black men to join the Union army.
(A) traveled through the North to exhort THE MAIN CONCEPT IMO IS THAT THE THIRD PART REFERS TO "RECRUITING AGENT" AND NOT TO AN ACTION OF FREDERICK (A PARTICIPLE AND NOT VERB) SO WE SHOULD NOT USE A VERB

(B) and he traveled through the North and exhorted SAME AS A + EVEN IF IT WAS NOT IN REFERNCE TO AGENT IT SHOULD BE SERVED, TRAVELED AND EXHORTED (NOT SERVED AND .... AND..)

(C) and traveling through the North exhorted NOT PARALLEL. HE SERVED AS AN AGENT AND AS TRAVELING? DOES NOT MAKE SENSE.
(D) traveling through the North and exhorted NOT PARALLEL
(E) traveling through the North and exhorting, A RECRUITING AGENT, IS DESCRIBED BY HIS TRAVELING AND EXHORTING-PARALLEL
