Hello,
Thank you for providing means of interactions through this forum. My query is such:
I have worked in companies like Accenture, and IBM (where I'm at currently in US) - 6 yrs of work exp as of now. Lately been musing a job switch, and thinking of becoming a freelance consultant/contractor at quite smaller firm (yes, the hourly rates are much better than what one gets on joining biggies on full time payroll). I plan on doing my MBA in 2014. Would it hurt career prospects at time of admissions (or later on even during placements?) if I have the latest 2 years of work exp as a independent consultant/contractor. Or should I switch to only 'established firm' and stay there till time of MBA.
Becoming a contractor would also help finance my MBA significantly, but I don't want to risk chances during admissions if being a contractor (in the last 2 years of work exp) should be viewed less favorably than a full time position at a big firm.
Please do share your thoughts.
Thanks in advance.
Hi,
I dont think that becoming a freelance consultant /contractor is going to ruin your chances of getting a admit in a good B School. You can look at it like this : you have already gained significant amount of experience while working in big companies and now you are going for a different ride altogether. At the B school you will have a lot to offer and the biggest among them is the diversity that you are going to achieve in the future by taking this step. However you should have one thing to be very clear in your mind :- Why you want to leave your present job and want to dive in a new pool . If this is clear in your mind then you are definitely a prospective candidate for any B School.
