Frobisher, a sixteenth-century English explorer, had soil samples from Canadaâ€™s Kodlunarn Island examined for gold content. Because high gold content was reported, Elizabeth I funded two mining expeditions. Neither expedition found any gold there. Modern analysis of the islandâ€™s soil indicates a very low gold content. Thus the methods used to determine the gold content of Frobisherâ€™s samples must have been inaccurate.

E. Gold was not added to the soil samples collected by Frobisher before the samples were examined.

Ok so I used POE for this.

A - There was no gold found earlier also. Does not go with the conclusion.
B - It means that there was gold. Hence Incorrect.
C - Maybe true but then no gold was found by modern methods
D - Out of Scope.
E - This can be the assumption. That if gold was not added the methods used were inaccurate.

Hence E is correct.
