The media now devote more coverage to crime than they did ten years ago. Yet this is not because the crime rate has increased, but rather because the public is now more interested in reading and hearing about crime. After all, a crucial factor in the media’s decisions about what issues to cover and to what extent to cover them is the interests of their audiences.

The proposition that the public is now more interested in reading and hearing about crime plays which one of the following roles in the argument?

(A) It supports the conclusion that the media now devote more coverage to crime than the crime rate alone justifies.
(B) It is presented as evidence that the media decide what to cover and to what extent to cover it depending on the interest of the public.
(C) It is a counterexample to the claim that the media devote more coverage to crime now than they did ten years ago.
(D) It is a generalization based on the claim that the crime rate has increased over the past ten years.
(E) It is offered as an alternative explanation of why the media devote more coverage to crime now than they did ten years ago.

If I understand the question properly, the correct answer should be B. The conclusion is clear from the stimulus: "...the media’s decisions about what issues to cover and to what extent to cover them is the interests of their audiences"

Therefore, the "proposition that the public is more interested about crime" is the evidence to support the media's actions.

a) The conclusion is that the media will cover what its audiences want to view. The crime rate is not part of the conclusion
b)
c) Not a counterexample
d) Out of scope
e) It does not offer an alternative explanation

Nice outline rigger, indeed the answer must be B. Think of the media as a demand driven service.

OA is E. No OE provided.

Well in the test I had chosen B.. But after seeing the OA, I think E might be correct.
The first explanation is, media devotes more coverage to crime because crime rate has increased. But this is not true.. Therefore the alternate explanation is public is more interested in reading and hearing about crime. (this choice E states)

got this one wrong.... I was thinking it is A.

But I after taking a closer look, I see why E is the answer.

Conclusion is that crime did not increase in 10 years.
Premise is The media now devote more coverage to crime than they did ten years ago.

there can be various reasons for that. one of the reason is public interest.

A. it is not supporting the conclusion.
B. There is no evidence in this argument
C. it is not a counter example, it is consistant with the conclusion
D. makes the conclusion false
E. it is actually providing an alternative explanation.
Crime did not increase, still coverage is more, what is the reason for that?
So our answer choice should be E.
