From 1980 to 1989, total consumption of fish in the country of Jurania increased by 4.5 percent , and total consumption of poultry products there increased by 9.0 percent . During the same period, the population of Jurania increased by 6 percent, in part due to immigration to Jurania from other countries in the region.

If the statements above are true, which of the following must also be true on the basis of them?

A. During the 1980’s in Jurania, profits of wholesale distributors of poultry products increased at a greater rate than did profits of wholesale distributors of fish.

B. For people who immigrated to Jurania during the 1980’s, fish was less likely to be a major part of their diet than was poultry.

C. In 1989 Juranians consumed twice as much poultry as fish.

D. For a significant of Jurania’s population, both fish and poultry products were a regular part of their diet during the 1980’s

E. Per capita consumption of fish in Jurania was lower in 1989 than in 1980.

A. During the 1980’s in Jurania, profits of wholesale distributors of poultry products increased at a greater rate than did profits of wholesale distributors of fish. we only know the % increase in the consumption of fish and poultry, so we can't assume this.

B. For people who immigrated to Jurania during the 1980’s, fish was less likely to be a major part of their diet than was poultry.
we do not know the exact number of immigrants and do now know how they influenced the consumption rate.

C. In 1989 Juranians consumed twice as much poultry as fish. again, we only know the increase in rates, but not the total consumption levels..

D. For a significant of Jurania’s population, both fish and poultry products were a regular part of their diet during the 1980’s
regular part of their diets,,, we can't assume this since they can eat a tonne of fish only one day out of 30, thats not regular is it.
E. Per capita consumption of fish in Jurania was lower in 1989 than in 1980. correct. total consumption increased by less than the total population growth for fish, so the actual consumption per capita must have decreased.

E for me.

Since consumption went up, but so did the overall population, it makes sense that the per capita amount decreased.

Hi, buffdaddy's explanation captures this information.

In addition, we can't decipher this information from the question stem, as fish might be costing say 100$ with 50$ as profit. At the same time poultry might also cost 100$ but has only 5$ profit. Even though the consumption would increase, the total profit volume for fish might be greater than poultry's. E is the right answer.

I can think of the following explanations why option "A" can't be the answer.

There might be more wholesale distribuors could have been added in these period. Also, profit depends on several factors. Hence, nothing can be said about it.

Moreover, the information given for option A (i.e. regarding the profits of the wholesale distributor) is beyond the information given in the passgae.

Straight E.

For those wondering why A is not the answer - reread the premises - nothing speaks of rising costs of fish or profit increase in fish. Who knows - poultry prices may have fallen and fish prices may have increased - which would cause A to be untrue. Basically, in CR, if it requires you to imagine too much, its probably wrong.
