Question Stats:

50% (01:28) correct 50% (00:00) wrong based on 2 sessions
From 1980 to 1989, total consumption of fish in the country of Jurania increased by 4.5 percent, and total consumption of poultry products there increased by 9.0 percent. During the same period, the population of Jurania increased by 6 percent, in part due to immigration to Jurania from other countries in the region.

If the statements above are true, which of the following must also be true on the basis of them?

A. During the 1980’s in Jurania, profits of wholesale distributors of poultry products increased at a greater rate than did profits of wholesale distributors of fish.
B. For people who immigrated to Jurania during the 1980’s, fish was less likely to be a major part of their diet than was poultry.
C. In 1989 Juranians consumed twice as much poultry as fish.
D. For a significant proportion of Jurania’s population, both fish and poultry products were a regular part of their diet during the 1980’s.
E. Per capita consumption of fish in Jurania was lower in 1989 than in 1980.

Maybe am I too much math driven but I choose E.

A : no reference to any profit rate in the stem
B : We do not know the breakdown of consumption old/new inhabitants vs fish/poultry, increase in poultry consumption could be attributed to 80 inhabitants as well as new comers
C : no numbers to jauge level of consumption
D : significant in the reasonning... no way
E ...

I am choosing E.

A,B,C,D cannot be arrived with the given stem.
But, fish consumption increased by 4.5% and population increased by 6%.
It means that per capita consumption of fish was less in 1989 than in 1980.

E will hold only if the consumption of fish and poultry were equal in 1980....isnt it ?

I would have thought B is closer...

B) is not correct b/c maybe the ppl from jurania did not eat fish or poultry at all. we dont know their eating habits. the only fact that we get to know is that the population grows.

I think with these kind of questions the answer becomes clear once you use some numbers. I set 100 as the 1980 population thus 1989 population is 106. Number of fish consumed in 1980 is 100, and in 1989 is 10.45. Now, 100/10 is less than 106/10.45, thus E is the correct answer.
