from 600 to 720 (Q50, V35) wow what a relief.... [#permalink] New post 25 Nov 2009, 09:08
Hi everybody

Finally took GMAT for the second time today and got 720!!!! After my first attempt when I got 600 it was a great improvement, although I believe I could've done more.

So here's how it happened.....

In February this year I took GMAT and got 600 (Q45, V27)...This wasnt the score I was expecting and I knew with that kind of score I didn't have any chances to make into a top school. So, few months later I decided to retake it.

I knew I was weak at Verbal, so I started with Manhattan GMAT SC, which is a MUST FOR EVERYONE who wants to improve his/her verbal skills. I also practiced a lot of RC and CR questions from OG11.

For Math Section I used:

1. GMATCLUB TESTS. They are awesome!!! I took em all and mostly scored in 85-99% range.
2. Manhattan GMAT CATs. I'd say questions from the quant section of these CATs are harder than those of actual GMAT.
3. OG11
4. Tons of other questions I've found on this forum

For Verbal

1. Again, Manhattan GMAT CATs are very useful. Although the questions on actual GMAT were tougher than the ones on CATs.
2. Any tough Verbal questions I could find on the forums.

I took some prep tests and here's what I got.

Manhattan GMAT CATs

CAT1 730 Q51 V38
CAT2 720 Q50 V38
CAT3 690 Q48 V36 (kind of screwed up on this test, was very inattentive and wasnt feeling very good)
CAT4 730 Q49 V40
CAT5 750 Q51 V 41
CAT6 780 Q51 V45 (In this test most of questions were in 600-700 range. Maybe there were no more tough questions left so I got a little bit higher score?)

Then I reset Manhattan GMAT CATs and retook CAT1 and got 780 Q51 V45. Again, many tough questions I saw during this test were familiar to me, so this score might be a little bit inflated, I think.

I also took GMATPrep

Test 1. 750 Q50, V40
Test 2. 750 Q51 V 40

Today, on the exam day, I was confident I was gonna score over 700, but wanted to get 750 or higher...But again, the Verbal section seemed tougher than that of Manhattan GMAT or even GMATPREP. Some SC questions were too intricate and one RC passage was way too long!!!! Plus I couldn't figure a couple of CR questions, so I clicked and moved on....

When I got the results, I sighed....I knew I could've done better on verbal and would've probably scored 750 or something like that, but since I AM NOT A NATIVE SPEAKER...I am kinda satisfied with my score.

So, I am happy I scored 720 after scoring 600 few months ago!!!! That's 120 more!!!!!!!

P.S.
I'd like to thank everybody in here for this amazing forum and esp. GMATCLUB tests!!!!!

P.P.S.
If you have any questions, dont hesitate, drop me a message.

Congrats!!! Great score!! :good

You've really improved your verbal skills: V27 --- > V35. That's impressive.

thanks.

I did not really have any specific time management technique. I just spend on average 1.6-2 minuted on each questions and move on. If the question is a real tough one, I might linger a little bit more....but then I'll have to rush thru the other ones at the end...Although on the actual exam I finished with a couple of minutes left, so there's no need to rush.
