From GMATPrep :

If s and t are 2 different numbers on the number line, is s+t=0 ?

(1) the distance between s and 0 is the same as the distance between t and 0

(2) 0 is between s and t

The answer is A, but I cannot understand why, can you ?

I was sure it was C.
As far as I understand the first statement, it only says that |s|=|t|, but it does not tell anything more.

Thank you for your help

Given s and t are 2 different nos is s+t = 0?

i.e. is s = -t ?

St1: Since the distance between s and 0 and t and 0 are the same and they are 2 different points.

One is +ve and the other -ve so sum = 0 ----Suff.

St2: 0 is between s and t but it does not say if 0 is the mid-point.

s = -t only if 0 is exactly in the middle.---Hence Insuff

Ans is A.

A is it,

i guess its a OG problem. if t and s are different numbers and distances between s-o and between t-o are equal, O must be in between s and t.

so now; t = -s.

2 is unnecessary.

I think the tricky part is noticing that the question stipulates that s & t are different numbers. I got tricked the first time I did this problem until I read closer.

Lesson learned: Read the question very very carefully.

But of course !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot believe that I am still being tricked by these text subtleties...
Now that I re-read the question, I realize this question is very easy, with the condition that you read thoroughly the text.

Thank you !

Thank you for your help

From 1) s-0 = t-0
hence s+t=0 Remember s ans t are twoo different numbers

From 2) s can be -3 and t can be 2
S+t != 0
Hence A
