from mgmat

A new cell phone plan is offering pricing based on average monthly use. Brandon and Jodie are comparing their average use to determine the best plan for them. Brandon's average monthly usage in 2001 was q minutes. Was this less than, greater than, or equal to Jodie's 2001 average monthly usage, in minutes?

(1) From January to August 2001, Jodie's average monthly usage was 1.5q minutes.

(2) From April to December 2001, Jodie's average monthly usage was 1.5q minutes.

B.

2) seems to be sufficient: 1,5qx9months=13.5q, which is greater than 12q already

1) is not sufficient cause 1,5qx8=12q, if he she did not speak the last 4 months it is possible that they bot had the same average

think it should be C, both statements taken independently are insufficient. From st1 sum is 12q and from st2 sum is also 12q if we add this we cover the whole year with overlap of 4 months. 24q/16>q so both together are sufficient.

won't the average go down when the usage is 0 for the unknown months. I think the answer should be C.

if so, for the condition 2) we have to divide 13,5q by 12, which greater than q already and it doesn't matter whether she speeks the rest of the year. => 2) sufficient

For the condition 1) we have 12q for eight months. Let's divide by 12 gives average of q for the whole year and we don't know if she spoke during the other 4 months and if average exceeded q or remained on the same level. => 1) is not sufficient

Yes I agree with B. It is already 13.5, which is more than 12 anyway.
