Frustrated - 650 practice to 570 on the real thing [#permalink] New post 22 Nov 2010, 11:40
I took the GMAT today and scored a 570. My quant was a 44 and verbal was 25. I have been studying for 3+ months including a Manhattan GMAT class. Before the MGMAT class I scored a 580 on my practice test. After the class I took 3 practice tests and scored 650, 640 and 650 then studied for another 10 days and took the test hoping for a 650+. Anyway, my verbal score on the real thing was the worst I have ever scored. I wonder if I was just nervous and a little burnt out by the time I got to the verbal section. I am looking for any advice on books to read, strategies, etc. for the verbal section. I plan on taking the GMAT again in 4-6 weeks.

Also, any advice on applying during the 3rd round for business school? I was hoping to score 650+ and have my applications in for second rounds, but that doesn't look like it will be possible. I have been told the 3rd round is very difficult.

Thanks!

Your low Verbal score is quite a concern. It may mean that either you were not fundamentally very sound, or lacked the insight to apply the learnt concepts quickly.
What was your strategy when you prepared ? Did you become strong enough in one particular topic, and then apply those concepts by practicing a sufficient number of questions from that topic ?
What was your level of comfort with the passages, which can at sometimes become too obscure ? Did you practice enough RCs so that you become comfortable with various topics from various fields ? In RC , after you are done with the basic strategies, practice quality passages as much as possible and analyze each and every question.

So the key in SC and CR is to grasp a concept well and then apply that in questions.Keep revising the concepts and keep practicing more questions.
For RC,go through the basic strategies and then practice, practice and practice yet more!
