Congrats everyone! Feel free to reach out to me if you have any HSM-related questions. I'm a current FY. Will be busy until winter break but would be happy to help out.

Hi there!

I will probably have tons of questions - but for now, I was just wondering how many HSM students there are. What % of the day-time MBA students are HSM students?

Also, is your signature supposed to be a link by any chance?

Thanks!

In the day time program, there are roughly 90 students in HSM. It's about 20-25% of the entire day time class.

My signature was indeed intended to be a link. But I need to wait for 10 days and have 10 posts before I'm allowed to have links there =)

Thanks!

I guess I could have just googled your blog, and I would have found my answers there :)
http://www.stevensma.com/2013/06/mba-pr ... focus.html

Let me help you get to your required 10 posts by asking more questions

Why did you choose Duke over other programs with a healthcare focus? (Wharton/Haas/Sloan/Ross are mentioned in your blog. Kellogg has HEMA as well) Is there anything particular Duke has to offer over other MBA/healthcare programs?

Other than finding internships and jobs, in what way does your knowledge in biology help in the HSM program (if at all)?

I personally find Fuqua having the following advantages. The other schools may have one or more of these attributes, but Duke is the only school that encompasses all of them:

1. Largest HSM class size. This means that health care companies like to recruit here because of volume. I'm recruiting for biopharma and don't need to do anything off campus. This is a huge advantage. Also, class discussions are amazing because of the class size. I'll put more examples in my blog over winter break, but I've learned so much from my classmates who come from all areas of healthcare.

2. Big Duke has amazing healthcare opportunities. The medical center is world class with leading clinicians and researchers. There is also a hospital experiential internship for folks who are interested in the provider space.

3. RTP is a hub for life sciences. GSK, Quintiles, Biogen are here, just to name a few. Countless startups.

Your second question: specifically for biopharma, there will be some advantage to having a biology degree, but there has been nothing in the HSM program that I needed to use my biology background. I am doing a project outside of academics in which we are commercializing an early-stage cancer therapeutic. For that I am heavily utilizing my bio/NIH background.

The payment options says that one can submit a check or a money order. Does anyone know if the check can be a personal check or does it need to be a bankers/cashiers check?

Congrats on the admit!

I was an EA admit last year too - didn't get my fuqua email until May 23rd.
Not to worry - the incoming students site has everything Fuqua you'll need until then.

Anyone else besides Hailmary heard from Re-Vera informing that the background check is complete. Seems to be very random, they have just contacted one of my recommender until now.

It's been three weeks since I sent them my pay stub and personnel record (I'm military) and one of my recommenders got an email. Haven't heard anything since. I have no idea about how it all happens behind the curtain. A current student I spoke to says its more like a 4-6 week process than the 2-4 that they promise. Who knows. Just one more thing we all want to get out of the way. I'd figure since its a first come, first serve system and we were some of the first people to hear back and get the process started it would be a quick process. (shrug)

Congrats to all the new Blue Devils!!

I know that checks are a stressful part of the process but it's good to know that their durations vary wildly depending on when in the cycle they occur. I think with more people receiving decisions earlier this year, across all schools, ReVera is getting slammed. It's not uncommon for the checks to take even longer when R2 admits decide to matriculate and I've heard stories of checks still occurring while Orientation and Fall 1 are already underway. This process is something that will never be transparent to us students and the time it takes seems random so just try and rest easy knowing that you got the hard part (getting in) nailed!

I guess Re-Vera read my post - I just got an email stating that my verification process is complete and done. Too about 3-4 weeks, for those still waiting.
