Fuqua vs. Kenan Flagler($$$) [#permalink]
28 Apr 2012, 16:56
I need some help trying to decide between paying full price at Duke or heading to UNC on a full tuition fellowship. I preferred Duke on my visits, but a full fellowship at UNC makes it tough. I am a career switcher looking to break into IB. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

I vote Fuqua... I feel you have a better chance of breaking into IB with the Duke name. Also, 100K is going to be marginal if you do IB for a few years (and especially if you're in it for the long haul and make managing partner ). But if cost is really a big concern, I recommend contacting Duke and letting them know about the UNC full tuition... and seeing if they are willing to offer you any scholarship to help defray the cost.

I'm kind of surprised the voting has been slanted in Duke's favor so far. I appreciate the input that Duke may place better in IB, but looking on Linkedin it seems like both schools are about on equal footing with alumni in IB. Posted from my mobile device

Duke will give you a better shot in the long run... If you have doubts about your choices, take the time to visit Flagler, talk to current students, the recruitment center, etc on how Flagler will help you achieve your goals. Travel expense would be a small price to pay for the peace of mind in making the right decision...

I actually just had the same exact dilemma and ended up choosing UNC. I disclosed the situation to Fuqua and they will reconsider you for merit scholarships but not on the basis of what other schools are offering (at least that's what they said). I'm interested in marketing and feel long term I will do just as well at UNC and am happy I won't have to take a job just to make sure I can pay off my debts. I think you have two really great options and can't lose either way (though I hope we will see you at Kenan-Flagler). Good luck! Posted from my mobile device

I'm obviously biased, but after just finishing up my first year at Fuqua, my advice to anybody choosing between two schools is go for the best brand, especially if you are gunning for IB or consulting. You will make up the extra expense incredibly quickly and you will have that brand and network with you for the rest your life. Posted from my mobile device

Have you checked out both schools' employment reports with respect to IB? Based on my undergrad experience, I know Duke places pretty well on the street. Not sure about UNC though... nuclearmba wrote: I need some help trying to decide between paying full price at Duke or heading to UNC on a full tuition fellowship. I decided to attend Kenan-Flagler. I just couldn't pass up the cash. In my case the freedom of not being constrained by a mountain of debt outweighed the value of the Duke brand.
