With 2.5 years of work experience in IT,I decided to leave my job and prepare for CAT(Indian MBA exam). After 6 months of hard labor,I still could not manage to get great marks. At this point of time I was hell bent to go for MBA as I hated IT job, so started preparing for GMAT. I tried twice in next 6 months but failed to cross the 700 barrier. Finally I moved back to my IT job in one of the top companies, but still kept on preparing for GMAT. Few days back I finally scored 710, but now I don't know whether I have killed my chances with this gap.
So finally I have 3 years of work ex and 1 year of gap. I was passively involved with one of my friends in his start up company(just giving him suggestions and working on presentations etc) while I was preparing for these tests. Now, I don't know will they consider it as my work ex? My friend is ready to give me a letter stating that I was involved in the start up, but I am not sure as I don't know any client personally for reference or recommendation.
What do I do. Please suggest.
Well, it looks like your goal is to do an MBA. It is just a 1/2 year program. What after that? Have you thought about your career goals after MBA? I've seen many people doing an MBA who are still clueless what they want to do and equally unhappy with their current profile.
Did you enjoy working at your friend's startup as compared to your IT job? If yes, have you considered joining him full time? If you can leave your job to prepare for an exam, you can certainly take your chances for something you like doing. Try doing some introspection and look for a job that suits your skills and interests.
This way, you can gain experience at something you love and when you'll love your job, you will excel at it. After 1-2 years, your profile will be rocking with some great achievements at work.
As of now, even though you can fake your gap, but you will still be looking for something better after an MBA. Trust me.
