General Info & Profile Evaluation [#permalink]

Hello Everyone,
I am on H1B (Working in Trenton, NJ) visa with 3.5 years of pulp and paper industry (R&D Manager)experience, I have a Masters in Chemical Engineering from University of Maine with 3.75 GPA.
I have worked on a brand new paper mill start up in USA (2 years in my previous job)
I am planning to take GMAT soon.
I would like your inputs
What will be my chnaces at Wharton, NYU, Columbia ?-(Proximity to where I live)
Can I still work and do full time MBA?
How will the classes be scheduled - any flexibility of evening or weekend classes?

Hi Rajesh, Thanks for your post. With regards to attending an MBA full-time, typically students who work full-time attend business school part-time. An MBA curriculum will be rigorous and it is difficult to both work and attend school full-time. With regards to your application to Wharton, Columbia, and NYU, in addition to what you have written, your acceptance will depend on your GMAT score, letters of recommendation, essays, and how you present yourself as a candidate. Right now you should focus on studying for the GMAT and considering how you want an MBA admissions team to see you as an applicant; what key messages do you want them to be left with after reading your application? Whats the difference between full time and part time MBA.
Is getting a MBA important from an university important issue or getting it full time or part time a bigger issue?
How do employer see this when someone has a MBA from reputed school but not full time MBA?

Rajesh. Rajesh,
The main difference in Part time and full time MBA is that the part time MBA lets you work fulltime, while a full time does not. There are some excellent part time programs as well and the final choice between a part time and full time will come to decide between if you want to leave your current job or no. If you are looking to move up in your career at the existing company and it's an MBA that is holding back, part time MBA is a great option. However, if you are looking to change career/transition to a new job, nothing can beat the career services of a full time MBA program. Finding a new job with a part time MBA is going to be difficult than a regular one just because recruitment activities in part time is limited. That is also because a large number of the part time MBA students are funded by their respective companies and hence, stress on campus recruitment is not that substantial.
Regarding your original question about working while being in a full time MBA program at the schools you mentioned, the answer is that it could be really difficult if your employer is not flexible. Any good full time MBA program gets dead busy, especially during the first year. Hope this helps.

GMAT # 600 (Q44, V27)
Years of experience 3.5 in Specialty Chemicals and paper making
Worked on a brand new paper mill start up for 2009 Jan - 2010 Oct.
Have a M.S in Chemical Engineering - 3.75 GPA.
Can any one recommend any good part time MBA schools in northeast around in and around New Jesey
What are my chances for part time MBA
NYU, Temple Fox, Goergetown University ... anyother schools please recommend.

Hi homasote, Can you talk a bit more about your work experience. In your position, do you manage and lead others? Do you have a history of progression in your career? I worked as an Application engineer (Technical) for 1 year with Kemira Pulp & Paper Chemicals - Specialty Chemical Company
Next 2 years I was with Aurora Specilaty Chemistries - Technical Sales & Service
Managed over 2 million dollar account in sales - Process Chemicals for brand new paper mill - 100% recycled.
I was responsible for instatlling, optimizing chemsitry & training operators for the whole mill - Mill Capacity 1000 tons of light weight Linerboard paper every day.
Past 5 months I am working as R&D Manager (Management) for Hoamsote Company - Trenton, NJ (100% recycled paper mill) - Manage 1 person.

Hi Rajendra, A full-time MBA is an intensive course and requires you to put in long hours. Balancing a full-time job along side would not be feasible. There are several good part-time MBAs from the top schools that can be pursued as well if you are keen to continue working. However, the learning curve would be alot higher in a full-time MBA as you get to spend time interacting with peers and professors apart from the regular course work.
